Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there an age restriction for the HPV test?

Our medical team does not recommend routine HPV testing for women under the age of 25 because HPV is a very common virus and for women under 25, the virus often clears on its own – without any treatment. We recommend you begin HPV screening once you turn 25.

How much is the Home HPV Screening Test?

If you’re planning to use your health insurance, there is a $15 checkout fee that covers the shipping, processing, and kit components, which are not covered by any insurance plan. Our lab partner, Molecular Testing Labs, will bill your insurance for the test. If our lab partner is in-network with your insurance, you will be responsible for any charges that apply to your copay or deductible, until your deductible has been met. If these charges are more than you can afford – our lab partner has a very generous financial assistance program to help you with your out of pocket expenses. If our lab partner is out of network for your insurance – your maximum out of pocket charge will be an additional $45.

PLEASE BE ADVISED: After your lab order is completed, you may receive an Explanation of Benefits from your insurance company. This is essentially the negotiation/communication between the lab that processed your kit and your insurance. This will most likely NOT be what your out of pocket cost will be. If you receive a bill, it will come directly from our lab partner, Molecular Testing Labs.

If you’re paying out of pocket, the HPV test will cost a flat fee of $69.

My birth control is not listed. Do you carry it?

There are so many brands and generics of birth control that we cannot list all of them in our catalog. However, if you are looking for a specific medication, we can often still prescribe it. You will want to select the “Help me find what’s best” option here. You can let us know your preferred medication either in the questions about prior birth control experience if you were previously on it, or during the “Anything else we should know about or do you have questions for the doctor?” section at the end of the health survey.

Please note that many popular birth control brands were discontinued by their manufacturer and are no longer available to be prescribed by our medical team. These medications include:

  • Alesse
  • Amethyst
  • Aubra
  • Femynor
  • Gildess 1/20
  • Gildess 1.5/30
  • Loestrin 1/20
  • Loestrin 1.5/30
  • Loestrin Fe 1/20
  • Loestrin Fe 1.5/30
  • Loestrin 24 Fe
  • Lomedia 24 Fe

  • TriNessa
  • TriNessa Lo
  • Ortho-Cyclen

The good news is all these medications have an FDA-approved equivalent! An FDA-approved equivalent is equally efficacious and safe to continue taking. Our medical team is happy to help you find a new birth control that works for you. To get started, you can submit a new request here.

I heard Nurx is offering home HPV screening tests now. Can I try it?

Yes! We are excited to offer our Home HPV Screening Test as a way for women to get tested for HPV from the comfort and convenience of their own home. For more information on HPV, cervical cancer, and the Home HPV Screening Test, please go here.

What does the home HPV screening test look for?

There are over 150 different strains of HPV – some are low risk and others are high risk. The high risk strains, particularly strains 16 and 18, are responsible for about 70% of cases of cervical cancer. For most people, the virus clears on its own without any treatment. In some cases, an HPV infection with a high risk stain can potentially lead to cancer.

Our home HPV screening test detects 14 high-risk HPV types in a single analysis. The test identifies HPV16 and HPV18: which causes the vast majority of cervical cancer cases – while also detecting the rest of the high risk types: 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68.

If no high risk strains of HPV are detected, then no additional testing is needed for 3 years. Since cervical cancer is caused by high risk strains of HPV, a person with no high risk HPV present is very unlikely to develop cervical cancer in the near future.

If a high risk strain of HPV is detected, we suggest getting a follow up directly from your women’s health provider. Since this is only a screening test and not a cancer diagnosis, it’s always best to get some additional testing done in person. We can help you figure out next steps!

Pap Smear (Cervical Cytology)

When we think of cervical cancer screenings, we usually think of going to a healthcare provider’s office, undressing, putting your feet up in stirrups and waiting for the speculum exam. This process allows a healthcare provider to collect cells from inside of the cervix which are observed under a microscope by a cytologist or pathologist. The cytologist will determine if the cells look abnormal – which could indicate cervical cancer or pre-cancer.

HPV Test

For a HPV test, a sample is collected from inside the vagina, close to the cervix. The sample is processed to look for high risk HPV DNA. If high risk HPV strains are not present – the risk of developing cervical cancer in the near future is very unlikely, since most cases of cervical cancer is caused by high risk HPV. If high risk HPV DNA is detected- you should have additional testing including a pap smear or a colposcopy to ensure any cervical cell changes are found and treated early – to prevent the development of cervical cancer.

What is this pending charge on my card?

Once you mail back your samples, you can expect a medical provider will review and share your results within 3 to 5 business days. Please let us know if you have not heard from our medical team and we will be sure to check on the status of your results.

When can I expect my home test kit results?

Temporary authorizations

Similar to other online retailers, Nurx will temporarily reserve funds on your billing card for the estimated order total. This is an authorization and will appear as a pending charge on your card until your order is processed. The final price may differ, and that difference will be reflected when we charge your card.

When will my authorization be released?

If you see a pending amount, your bank will remove it typically within 5-7 business days, and your card will not actually be charged.

Once you’ve paid for your medication and your card is successfully charged, Nurx immediately releases the authorization. If you were charged a different amount, the remainder of that charge will be released to your account. Contact your bank for more info about its authorization policies and timelines.

I was charged but my order was canceled.

This is a temporary authorization, not a charge. Similar to other online retailers, our system will pre-authorize the card for the amount that we expect to charge prior to shipping the order to ensure that there are funds available when the pharmacy processes the order. If the order is canceled, the authorization will be released and returned to your available balance within a few business days depending on your bank policy.

An authorization caused an overdraft on my card. Who should I contact?

For questions or concerns about overdraft fees, please contact your bank directly.
